When Homework Becomes a Battleground

Learning Strategies

We understand that the transition from middle school to high school can be difficult for some students. The demands of high school are often greater than what students are used to, and they may not have the skills or strategies in place to manage their time and workload effectively.

Challenge

A high school freshman’s parents are concerned about their son’s lack of engagement with school, specifically with homework completion. The parents have tried to intervene at home, but this has led to screaming matches and nothing is working. Their son refuses to take advice from his parents and the parents continue to get emails from multiple teachers expressing their concerns about homework completion and preparedness for assignments.

Background

The student had gotten by leading up to high school by putting in the minimal amount of effort and still earned decent marks on graded assignments. In middle school, there weren’t significant consequences to handing in late homework or taking insufficient notes. Furthermore, the classes were not challenging for this individual, so having to spend more than an hour a night on assignments across multiple classes was not a required until high school.

Solution

We understand that the transition from middle school to high school can be difficult for some students. The demands of high school are often greater than what students are used to, and they may not have the skills or strategies in place to manage their time and workload effectively.

At The Lifing Group, we work with students to develop personalized plans to help them succeed in school. We will meet with them one-on-one to discuss their goals, challenges, and strengths. We will also gather feedback from the student’s parents and teachers to get a comprehensive understanding of the situation.

Once we are clear on the student’s needs, we will develop a plan that includes the following:

  • Helping the student develop better time management skills
  • Teaching the student how to break down large assignments into smaller, more manageable tasks
  • Providing the student with strategies for staying organized
  • Helping the student develop a positive attitude towards school

We will also work with the student’s parents to provide them with support and resources. We will help them understand the challenges their child is facing and offer them strategies for helping their child succeed.

We believe that with the right support, any student can overcome the challenges they are facing and achieve their academic goals. We are committed to helping them succeed and we are confident that we can make a positive difference in their lives.

We understand that this can be a difficult time for students and their families. We are here to provide support and guidance every step of the way. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
